In the past this was possibly easier to answer. Why? Because the idea of being a man or a woman was based on birth and defined what you could do or be, for life. There was a time, not that long ago in the U.S.A when woman were not allowed to learn long division. Even today some countries do not allow a woman to learn or go out without a male escort. And sadly, many religions and past cultural constructs, don’t and didn’t believe that women were people, they are treated like property.
But this is not about that.
This is a straight forward question for those in the U.S.A. who are faced with an absurd concept: The term he and she are offensive, so by default that would make labeling a Man and Woman also offensive. But who is offended by these “labels” … …
First and for most, is anyone really offended by the term he and she? And if you are, is it the word, or is it the societal construct of the meaning behind the word? I personally define a man or a woman or a hermaphrodite by the scientific method, which we will get into in just a moment.
So we go back to the beginning: What does it mean to be a man or a woman?
Is it hair? No. Men and Women, boys and girls share a variety of hair lengths.
Is it makeup? No. While Women traditionally wear more makeup than men, this cannot be seen as an indicator of what you are. After all, many women don’t like to wear makeup, and little girls don’t wear makeup…does this make them a man? Does this mean they identify as a man. No, it means they don’t like wearing makeup.
Is it clothes? Well since everyone in America (outside of some religious groups) wears shorts, pants, shirts, and the like…which leaves only Dresses. Does a Dress make you a woman? I would say no. Throughout time men have worn dresses and skirts.
Does playing sports make you a man? Generation X and above remembers a time when little girls who played sports and climbed trees were called Tomboys. (I am sure this word is on the list of words to be removed from our vocabulary) But does playing a sport make you a boy? Well by default, if this were true, that would make little boys who don’t play sports, little girls. A bunch of computer geeks shuttered. Why? Because they are men, they just don’t like sports.
Does your attractions make you a man or woman? No again. I know many a gay man that are “societally” male. Not to twist the subject but they identify as being a man. And the same is true for gay women.
So now we have come to a better understanding. Being a man or woman should not be a label based on artificial things… right? Right? Which means we need to use biology.
Quick Scientific Answer to what makes a Male a Male and a Female a Female.
Genetic Components of Sex and Gender
Humans are born with 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs. The X and Y chromosomes determine a person’s sex. Most women are 46XX and most men are 46XY. Research suggests, however, that in a few births per thousand some individuals will be born with a single sex chromosome (45X or 45Y) (sex monosomies) and some with three or more sex chromosomes (47XXX, 47XYY or 47XXY, etc.) (sex polysomies). In addition, some males are born 46XX due to the translocation of a tiny section of the sex determining region of the Y chromosome. Similarly some females are also born 46XY due to mutations in the Y chromosome. Clearly, there are not only females who are XX and males who are XY, but rather, there is a range of chromosome complements, hormone balances, and phenotypic variations that determine sex.
The biological differences between men and women result from two processes: sex determination and differentiation.(3) The biological process of sex determination controls whether the male or female sexual differentiation pathway will be followed. The process of biological sex differentiation (development of a given sex) involves many genetically regulated, hierarchical developmental steps. More than 95% of the Y chromosome is male-specific (4) and a single copy of the Y chromosome is able to induce testicular differentiation of the embryonic gonad. The Y chromosome acts as a dominant inducer of male phenotype and individuals having four X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (49XXXXY) are phenotypically male. (5) When a Y chromosome is present, early embryonic testes develop around the 10th week of pregnancy. In the absence of both a Y chromosome and the influence of a testis-determining factor (TDF), ovaries develop.
So generally, if you have a y you are a guy.
If you want to learn more about X and Y chromosomes, which is fascinating, I would suggest starting here: http://www.who.int/genomics/gender/en/index1.html#XXX Females
So to answer the question, scientifically, we have 3 different sexes. Males, Females, and Hermaphroditism which are those born with both mature ovarian and testicular tissues.
So what am I getting at? In our race to include everyone, we are actually excluding many. We are almost saying that you should be ashamed to call yourself a man or a woman because it is simply a societal construct…when this is not the case. We are, different, whether we want to face it or not. A man, at least for now, cannot carry a child. These labels of girls like dolls, and boys like trucks, come from something more primal and less societal. We need those who nurture, we need those who hunt, and we shouldn’t be ashamed of this, just like a transgender person should be ashamed of wanting to become a man or woman.
When I hear: Don’t say he or she it might offend someone: It makes me feel shame, shame of liking being a woman, because I do. Sure it has its downfalls, most notably camping in the woods, it sucks being a woman and having to use the bathroom, men have a clear advantage, but that is life.
So I ask everyone to really think about the direction we are heading. I believe that a man that becomes a woman surgically wants to be called a woman or a she. I don’t think they want to be a gender nothing…because if we are all gender nothings then what was the point in the first place? Right?
A few arguments that I will address latter will be as follow, as I know people will bring this up:
Not using he or she will break up the family unit. For the record, I think our economic situation is breaking up the family unit. I believe there should be at least 2 adults in the house, don’t care who they are, have 1 working and 1 raising the children.
And the other argument: This is mind-control, population-control, and double-speak. While I believe that this is very much like double-speak, I don’t think the person pushing the term ze instead of he or she is doing it intentionally…nevertheless it is something that needs to be address.
As always thank you for joining me. I’ll catch you on the flip side.
