Speech in Layton about Housing Crisis, and What I think is important:

Khrushchevka | Housing Everyone in a Housing Crisis the

The Future

Hello everyone.  My name is Elicia Clegg.  I was born in beautiful Utah, raised in the Ogden, Riverdale area, and moved to Layton when I was 21.  I have lived and worked in Layton for the past 26 years, and in that time so much has changed.

The question is: have these changes been a net positive or a negative? And in answering, could it be split, a positive for some, but a negative for most, and more to the point, what will the future of Layton look like. Interesting fact about 30% of the population of Layton is under 18.

There are approximately 82,600 people living in Layton about 51,350 are registered voters. I’m going to start rounding.  Of these voters 24,400 are Republican, 5,700 are Democrats, 90 Independent, 570 Libertarians, and 28 are Green Party. That leaves about 20,450 unaffiliated or you could use another word, disenfranchised voters.

Why do I bring up the word disenfranchised? To answer that, I want to give you a broad picture of our voters, based on the many who reached out to me via phone calls, text messages, and emails, not to mention the many I have since talked to that didn’t vote.

Many people feel angry, but above that, they feel hopeless, they feel that it doesn’t matter who they vote for, nothing is going to change, and we all  go in lockstep with the goals and agenda of powerful people with lots of money.

Many people don’t like high-density housing, me included.  Many wonder how huge houses were built in a mudslide area, some worry about fire hazards, lack of walking trails, lack of trees, lack of things needed for a population who values family and more importantly children.

Now of course there are pros and cons to different types of housing, of which I would love to get into more, but I am limited in time, and 3 minutes cannot even crack the surface of information. I will however have a lengthier explanation on my website.

My times up, so please come and talk to me, or send an email, text, visit my website, because I do want to earn your vote.  And I want to work together to come up with pragmatic solutions to help mitigate the problems that come with high density areas, because even if we stop future projects, outside of those already greenlit, we are now a high-density city.  I say this because many are already built, the people just haven’t moved in yet. Problems that we will see and need to mitigate, according to numerous studies, mental health and well-being will decline, while rates of violence, robbery, and assaults will increase.

Thank You. I look forward to speaking with as many of you as I can.
